The government of Tanzania has announced plans to award four new licenses to the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) to explore for natural gas and oil. The move aims to strengthen TPDC's capacity to manage and develop the country's oil and gas resources, increase energy availability, and stimulate industrial growth. The licenses were signed in Dar es Salaam, with Deputy President Deogratius Ndejembi emphasizing the importance of the move in enabling TPDC to participate fully in the oil and gas value chain.

According to Ndejembi, Tanzania began exploring for oil in the 1970s, with initial discoveries made in the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo areas. The country has since expanded its use of natural gas, particularly in electricity generation, with the Mtwara-Dar es Salaam gas pipeline increasing energy availability and reducing reliance on water sources during droughts. The use of natural gas has also expanded beyond power generation to include household use, vehicle fuel, and industrial activities.

Ndejembi emphasized that TPDC must strengthen its capacity in terms of local expertise, project management, and efficient use of capital, while ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with laws, license terms, safety standards, and environmental regulations. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with investors who have the necessary financial and technological resources to explore for natural gas.

The award of the four licenses is expected to enhance TPDC's role in the oil and gas sector, moving beyond its current position as a junior partner in exploration and production projects. This development is seen as a significant step towards maximizing the country's benefits from its natural resources. The licenses will enable TPDC to explore for oil and gas in new areas, potentially leading to new discoveries and increased energy production.

The Deputy President also called on TPDC and sector stakeholders to ensure that communities surrounding project areas benefit from investments through social services, including education and healthcare. This emphasis on social responsibility is seen as crucial in ensuring that the benefits of oil and gas exploration are shared equitably among Tanzanians.

The exploration and production of oil and gas are significant sectors in Tanzania's economy, with the potential to drive growth and development. The government has been working to create an enabling environment for investors, while also ensuring that the country's natural resources are managed sustainably and responsibly.

The award of the four licenses to TPDC marks a new phase in Tanzania's oil and gas exploration efforts, with the potential to unlock new discoveries and drive economic growth. The government has expressed its commitment to working with TPDC and other stakeholders to ensure that the country's oil and gas resources are developed in a responsible and sustainable manner.
