The Dansoman Circuit Court has granted bail to two accused persons, Kwame Akpoba, alias Bra Kwame, and Emmanuel Okyere, alias Obo Emma, standing trial with 15 others over alleged street robberies in parts of the Greater Accra Region. Each was granted bail of GH¢150,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a family member and the other a public servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 a month. They must report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) every two weeks until the case is determined.

The accused persons, including Bra Kwame, a 45-year-old butcher, and Obo Emma, a 48-year-old trader, are among 17 individuals facing three charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and dishonestly receiving stolen property. All accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. Nine of them, including Rashid Abdul, alias Stoneboy, and Jacob Wettey, alias Commander, were brought to court from police custody, while Bra Kwame and Obo Emma appeared on their own.

The case arose from a series of street robberies involving mobile phones and motorbikes reported in the Greater Accra Region and beyond. The Greater Accra Regional Police Command activated surveillance operations to curb the incidents, resulting in the arrest of several suspects at their hideout in Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, on October 1 and 2, 2026. Intelligence-led operations led to the recovery of stolen items and the arrest of suspects.

During investigations, some suspects allegedly admitted to participating in several robberies. Rashid Abdul, alias Stoneboy, allegedly admitted to robbing victims of their mobile phones and selling the stolen devices to Obo Emma. Jacob Wettey, alias Commander, allegedly admitted to robbing motorbikes with an accomplice and selling them to Bra Kwame and another person identified as Sulley.

The prosecution alleges that Bra Kwame, Obo Emma, and Sulley supplied the suspected robbers with money, machetes, and other offensive weapons to facilitate the robberies. The items stolen from victims were subsequently sold to them. The accused persons also allegedly mentioned other accomplices in the robberies, who were subsequently arrested or remain at large.

Four motorbikes allegedly recovered from Bra Kwame's house following his arrest include three Royal motorbikes and one GS Vesper motorbike, allegedly stolen from victims and sold to him. The prosecution said investigations were ongoing, and the case is being prosecuted by Chief Inspector Wonders.

The accused persons face charges under the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The charges include conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and dishonestly receiving stolen property. Bench warrants have been issued for the arrest of six accused persons who are currently at large.
