A tense standoff between police and a murder suspect ended in a shootout in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday morning. The suspect, wanted for the killing of two Crime Intelligence officers in April, was fatally wounded by police. According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a three-hour negotiation to persuade the suspect to surrender preceded the shootout. Police negotiators attempted to convince the suspect to surrender until he released his girlfriend, who was inside the house with him.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, had refused to comply with police instructions and opened fire from inside a house in the Emaplasini area of Inanda. A special task force member was also shot in the hand during the confrontation but received first aid and was in good spirits. The operation was part of an investigation into the April killings of Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo, who police say were ambushed in Mount Edgecombe.
The two Crime Intelligence officers were driving in an unmarked vehicle when they were accosted by a group of heavily armed assailants. They reportedly drove for several kilometres on Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, to escape the group, but were eventually shot at and killed. The officers' vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was also fired at when it came to a stop. The motive behind the murders has not been disclosed by the police.
The suspect killed in the shootout was one of several individuals linked to the murder of the two Crime Intelligence officers. Five alleged accomplices were arrested during an intelligence-led multidisciplinary operation conducted across several areas of the province on the same day. The arrests were made in separate operations in Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Mandeni, and Newlands West.
According to Colonel Netshiunda, the arrested suspects are being processed and are expected to appear in court on Monday. The operation was launched soon after the ambush, and a prosecutorial guided investigation was conducted. The police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder of the two Crime Intelligence officers.
The family of Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo believed that the attack was a hit, although the police have not confirmed this. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of police officers and the level of violence used by criminals.
