The Supreme Court of Nigeria handled a total of 2,456 cases during the 2025/26 legal year, according to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. This was disclosed on October 12, 2026, as the judiciary marked the beginning of the 2026/2027 legal year. The CJN made the announcement in Abuja, where she also cautioned judges against exhibiting partisanship in the resolution of disputes related to the upcoming 2027 general elections.
With the 2027 general elections scheduled for January next year, Kekere-Ekun emphasized the need for judges to remain impartial in their decision-making. She warned that any judge who exhibits conduct or behavior that could jeopardize their absolute impartiality would be scrutinized. The CJN stressed that the judiciary must approach electoral disputes with calmness, detachment, and fidelity to the law, just like any other dispute.
The 2026 legal year ceremony also marked the swearing-in of 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN). The new SANs comprise 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri. Their nomination had been approved by the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) a few months prior. The swearing-in ceremony officially kicked off the 2026/2027 legal year.
Kekere-Ekun noted that elections often generate heightened political activity and strong emotions, which can lead to disputes with significant consequences for individuals, political parties, and the country. She emphasized that judicial officers must remain conscious of their words and actions during an electoral period, as they will be subjected to scrutiny.
The CJN advised judges to exercise restraint, avoid political associations, and remain within the boundaries imposed by their oath and the constitution. This, she said, would help maintain the integrity of the judiciary and ensure that disputes are resolved fairly and impartially.
The Supreme Court's handling of 2,456 cases in the 2025/26 legal year demonstrates its commitment to dispensing justice and resolving disputes in a timely manner. The court's performance is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its judges and staff.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the judiciary will play a crucial role in resolving disputes that may arise during the electoral process. With Kekere-Ekun's guidance, the Supreme Court is poised to ensure that justice is served and that the electoral process is conducted fairly and transparently.
