Sudan's Finance Minister, Dr. Gibreel Ibrahim, recently met with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the African Development Bank to discuss ways to mobilize resources and provide support for refugees and displaced persons in the country. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance, focused on addressing the urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan and supporting programs for voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons.

The delegation, led by Mamadou Badi, Director of UNHCR for East Africa, and Alexander Motiubi, Regional Director of the African Development Bank for East Africa, discussed the commission's activities in Sudan and the efforts required to meet the needs of refugees and displaced persons. They also reviewed the requirements for voluntary return and provision of essential services to support stability in areas where citizens return.

Dr. Gibreel Ibrahim emphasized the importance of responding to Sudan's urgent needs, stressing the need for international support to assist in voluntary return efforts and provide aid to Sudanese affected by the war, both within and outside the country. The minister highlighted the need for international assistance to help Sudan address the challenges posed by the conflict.

Mamadou Badi stated that the delegation's visit aimed to mobilize the necessary financial resources to support Sudan during the post-war phase, particularly in matters related to refugees and displaced persons. He noted that Sudan is a significant country in Africa, with substantial resources and potential, and expressed hope for supporting efforts to address the damage caused by the war.

The African Development Bank and development partners are working with the Sudanese government to provide necessary support for the post-war phase. David Mototoko, Country Director of the African Development Bank in Sudan, announced that the bank will launch a water project in Port Sudan in November 2026, financed by the bank and implemented by UNICEF. The project aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation in the country.

The African Development Bank is also working to address the situation with water stations in Khartoum state, as part of efforts to improve water services and enhance basic infrastructure. The bank's support is crucial in helping Sudan recover from the devastating effects of the conflict and restore basic services to its citizens.

The meeting was described as productive by Ambassador Ja'far Sumi Tuto, Director of the Peace and Humanitarian Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He noted that the meeting covered several files and issues with promising future prospects, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in supporting Sudan's recovery efforts.
