The Sudanese Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries has organized a workshop to discuss the challenges facing the breeding of desert sheep in Sudan. The workshop, which was attended by several directors of general departments in the ministry and related parties, reviewed the experience of Fortliza company in the field of genetic improvement. The workshop was held under the slogan "Sustainable genetic resources, higher production, and a better future."
The workshop aims to continue the implementation of the national plan to improve the breed of animals and enhance efforts to develop production and productivity in the animal resources sector. The Deputy Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Ammar Sheikh Idris, emphasized the importance of developing genetic improvement programs for animal resources and working to improve the genetic characteristics of local breeds.
Dr. Sheikh Idris announced the continuation and completion of the national plan to improve the breed of Sudanese desert sheep. He stressed the need to benefit from national and foreign expertise in developing Sudanese breeds and expanding the umbrella of producers and organizing and supporting them to enhance marketing opportunities for their products.
The Director General of Animal Production Administration, Engineer Rahab Salah El-Din, stated that the workshop provides an opportunity to learn about scientific experience in the field of genetic improvement and exchange knowledge and expertise. She emphasized that the success of genetic improvement programs requires reliance on production data and records and setting clear programs for selection and genetic evaluation.
Engineer Rahab added that this would lead to increased productivity, improved profitability, and quality of animal products. Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Adam, an expert in the field, emphasized the importance of improving animal breeds and their role in supporting the national plan to improve sheep breeds. He pointed out that Sudanese desert sheep have high production capacity and efficiency in utilizing available feed resources.
The Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries has a plan to support small producers in partnership with the Ministry of Diwan of Federal Governance and Rural Development and the Ministries of Industry and Trade. The plan aims to provide support through guidance, marketing, and light industries under the supervision of the Ministry of Animal Resources.
