Libra International School in Uganda has successfully implemented Starlink satellite technology to address persistent internet connectivity challenges. The school, located in Zirobwe, Luweero district, had struggled to obtain a reliable internet connection due to its rural location. Despite previous attempts to improve connectivity, including the installation of signal boosters, the school faced significant difficulties in providing digital learning and online research opportunities for its students.
The school's director, William Sekabembe, stated that unreliable internet had hindered the institution's efforts to integrate technology into learning and other school activities. The poor connection affected students' access to online research materials, classroom activities, communication with parents, and the use of the school's digital management systems. Sekabembe noted that previous interventions were expensive and inefficient, highlighting the need for a more effective solution.
MTN Uganda, in partnership with Starlink, has introduced a satellite internet service for businesses and institutions operating in remote and underserved areas. The service was launched at Libra School during the demonstration of MTN Starlink for Business. This development aims to extend internet access to organisations constrained by limited mobile network coverage or the absence of fibre infrastructure.
Sekabembe expressed satisfaction with the new internet service, describing the internet speed as "fantastic" and its reliability as "top of the range". He noted that the introduction of Starlink has improved internet access across the campus, enabling teachers and students to use digital learning resources more effectively. The school's experience highlights the difficulties institutions outside major urban centres face in obtaining reliable internet connectivity.
MTN Uganda chief executive officer Sylvia Mulinge stated that the launch of MTN Starlink for Business was intended to expand connectivity options for organisations operating in areas where conventional internet infrastructure is limited or unavailable. Starlink uses a network of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide internet connectivity, serving locations where extending terrestrial infrastructure is difficult or costly.
The satellite service is designed to complement MTN Uganda's existing connectivity options, providing organisations with a primary internet connection, backup when existing services fail, or a quick connectivity solution. The service is expected to benefit organisations in various sectors, including healthcare, tourism, agriculture, mining, energy, construction, and humanitarian operations, particularly those with facilities or projects located beyond the reach of conventional connectivity infrastructure.
The implementation of Starlink at Libra School has improved internet access, enabling students to conduct research more easily and facilitating communication with parents. The school's examination and management systems are also functioning more efficiently, demonstrating the positive impact of reliable internet connectivity on educational institutions in rural areas.
