Investment giant STANLIB has announced a sponsorship deal with the Vodacom Premier League, injecting M250 000 into the league's Man of the Match awards. The sponsorship, unveiled at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena, will see the Man of the Match in each game receive M1000 in prize money. This move is part of STANLIB's 25th anniversary celebrations, with the company's Corporate Social Investment committee seeking ways to give back to communities.
The Vodacom Premier League, featuring 16 teams, will have 240 matches during the 2026/27 season. As a result, M240 000 will be spent on player rewards, while the remaining M10 000 will go towards logistics to ensure the initiative runs successfully. STANLIB Managing Director, Mohlabinyane Mohapi, expressed his excitement about the sponsorship, stating it will motivate players and contribute to the growth of football in Lesotho.
The sponsorship deal covers the 2026/27 season, with Mohapi leaving the door open for negotiations at the end of the campaign. Lesotho Football Association president, Lijane Nthunya, welcomed the sponsorship, describing it as a historic development for the league. He also renewed calls for the government to provide better sporting facilities, citing the suspended Setsoto Stadium's failure to meet CAF standards.
A panel comprising coaches and former players has been established to select the Man of the Match in every game. The panel will account for 90 percent of the selection, while supporters will determine the remaining 10 percent through voting on PLMC's social media platforms. PLMC General Manager, 'Mabonolo Senekale, confirmed the selection process, ensuring a fair and transparent evaluation of players.
The sponsorship deal is a significant boost to the Vodacom Premier League, with Nthunya highlighting the importance of recognizing player achievements throughout the season. Last season, the league had a few games with Man of the Match awards, but this new deal with STANLIB will see the rewards given out throughout the entire season.
STANLIB's involvement in the Vodacom Premier League is part of its Corporate Social Investment initiative, aiming to give back to communities. Mohapi emphasized the company's commitment to supporting football development in Lesotho, with the sponsorship serving as a testament to this commitment.
The partnership between STANLIB and the Vodacom Premier League is expected to have a positive impact on the league and Lesotho's football community. With the sponsorship, players will have an added motivation to perform, and the league will benefit from increased recognition and rewards for outstanding players.
