The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Lakes State has dissolved its leadership structures from the state level to the boma level as it prepares for internal elections and the upcoming general elections. This decision follows a directive from the party's High-Level Committee responsible for organizing its congress and primary elections. The move marks a significant restructuring of the party ahead of the electoral processes.

The dissolution affects party structures at the state, county, payam, and boma levels, with existing secretaries reassigned as technical advisers to the High-Level Committee and its organizing teams. Outgoing State Secretary Abraham Meen Kuc stated that the decision was made to reorganize the party's structures and prepare for internal elections. He clarified that the new arrangement applies to SPLM secretaries, while assistant secretaries will no longer operate under the dissolved structures.

Lakes State has been divided into three zones to facilitate the organization of internal elections. Zone One comprises Rumbek Centre, Rumbek East, and Wulu counties, while Zone Two covers Awerial, Yirol East, and Yirol West counties. Zone Three includes Cueibet and Rumbek North counties. SPLM members interested in contesting county chairperson positions must register with the organizing teams and obtain the required clearance.

Thondit Makur Makeny, the newly appointed chairperson of the Congress and Primaries Organising Committee for Rumbek East County, announced that his team consists of five members, including three men and two women. The organizing teams have been directed to proceed to their respective counties immediately to begin preparations for the internal elections. Makeny appealed to SPLM members from Rumbek East living in other parts of Lakes State and beyond to return to the county and participate in the electoral process.

Rose Yar Ater, deputy chairperson of the organizing team for Rumbek East, welcomed her appointment and urged women to actively participate in the process. She emphasized that women have the capacity to contribute meaningfully to national development and should be given opportunities to demonstrate their leadership abilities. Yar Ater encouraged women to assert their interest and demand their rightful representation at all levels under the 35 per cent affirmative action provision.

The internal electoral exercise is expected to help the SPLM reorganize its leadership, select new party officials, and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the upcoming general elections. The exercise will also provide an opportunity for SPLM members to participate in the electoral process and ensure their voices are heard. The party aims to ensure that the electoral process is organized properly in their areas.
