SpheMusic, the younger sister of DJ Sox, rose to fame at just 16 years old when her vocals featured on DJ Bongz's 2007 hit A s Long As You Love Me . Looking back, SpheMusic recalls that she was in Grade 10 and focused on school, home, and church, and didn't fully understand the magnitude of the song's success. People would tell her they had heard it in taxis, but without social media, she wasn't constantly seeing the reaction.
SpheMusic's entry into the music industry was facilitated by her brother, DJ Sox, who played a demo of her music while on his way to a DJ set in Port Shepstone. DJ Bongz heard it and wanted to work with her, resulting in her feature on A s Long As You Love Me , which landed on his album, Survival of the Fittest . This marked the beginning of her music career, which would later take a back seat to her corporate life.
SpheMusic stepped away from music to focus on her corporate career, completing her BCom and working in corporate marketing. She built a career and continued working, citing financial stability as a major concern, especially now that she's a mother. Music is not always financially stable, so she had to be practical about her life. This decision allowed her to create a stable foundation for her future.
SpheMusic admits that watching her music career take a back seat was difficult, but she notes that music was always a part of who she was. She was working and building a life for herself, but music remained a passion that she couldn't shake off. Looking back, she wishes she had stopped sleeping on herself sooner and given her musical side more room to grow.
In 2019, SpheMusic decided to give music another chance and released a comeback single that received significant rotation on Metro FM. She followed that with Khuluma , featuring Mondli Ngcobo, which was also well received. This led to the release of her debut album, Beautiful , in 2022. Her return to music marked a new chapter in her career.
As a mother, SpheMusic says that motherhood is a constant mirror that teaches her about unconditional love and makes her look at herself differently. Her daughter is outspoken, smart, and talented, with her own personality. Being her mother is a big part of who SpheMusic is, and it influences the decisions she makes. Motherhood has brought new perspectives and responsibilities to her life.
SpheMusic's relationship with herself has also undergone a transformation. She previously struggled with being a chubby woman in an industry with certain expectations of female artists. However, working with clothing brands in 2019 helped her see herself differently, building her confidence and reminding her that she didn't have to fit into one particular mould. Her latest single, Lomuntu , is a soulful, melodic dance record produced by Samurai Yasusa, celebrating love and carrying good energy.
