Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has outlined his vision for transforming transportation in Lagos, a city notorious for its congested roads. As the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Sowore aims to ease traffic congestion by introducing drone taxis and expanding water transportation. His proposals are designed to provide commuters with alternative transportation options, reducing travel times and improving overall efficiency.

Sowore's water transportation plan involves creating a waterway linking the Lagos Lagoon to Epe, allowing residents to travel directly between the two locations without encountering road congestion. He drew inspiration from Amsterdam, where waterways serve as vital transportation routes. This project, according to Sowore, would significantly reduce travel times and offer a more efficient alternative to road travel.

In addition to his water transportation plans, Sowore criticized Lagos' drainage infrastructure, arguing that improved waterways and dike construction could help mitigate flooding in the state. His administration, he said, would prioritize the development of these infrastructure projects to address the perennial flooding issues that plague Lagos.

Sowore also emphasized his commitment to introducing drone taxis, which he believes could revolutionize transportation in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that drone taxis could be adopted in Nigeria within his first four years in office, pending the development of the necessary technology and regulatory frameworks. These electric aircraft, Sowore noted, could transport passengers to destinations like Lekki without requiring conventional airports or dedicated helicopter landing facilities.

According to Sowore, drone taxis would not only offer a convenient mode of transportation but also improve passenger safety through advanced collision-avoidance technology. This technology, he argued, would make it more difficult for kidnappers to target travelers, thereby enhancing overall security. He cited the 2019 elections, where soldiers struggled to intercept commercial drones monitoring the polls, as an example of the technology's potential applications.

Sowore envisions Nigeria becoming a major hub for drone taxi manufacturing and transportation, with the aircraft powered by batteries as part of a broader transition towards green energy. He projected that drone taxis could transport around 200,000 workers to their workplaces in Abuja by 2030 or 2035. When questioned about the timeline, Sowore emphasized that infrastructure projects should serve the country beyond the administrations that initiate them.

The feasibility of Sowore's proposals, however, depends on various factors, including technological development, regulatory approval, and the development of supporting infrastructure. As the 2027 election approaches, Sowore's transportation plans are likely to be scrutinized by voters and fellow politicians alike. The AAC presidential candidate remains optimistic about the potential of his proposals to transform transportation in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
