The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM-IG), South Sudan's ruling party, has directed its cadres to return to their constituencies as preparations for the party's Third National Convention and the December 2026 general elections gain momentum. This move is aimed at ensuring that party members are actively involved in the electoral process.
SPLM Secretary General Akol Paul Kordit announced that senior party committees will be deployed to several states and administrative areas to oversee preparations for the convention and internal primaries. The teams will be sent to Upper Nile, Unity State, Jonglei State, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, and Ruweng Administrative Area to supervise party activities at the grassroots level.
According to Kordit, the deployed teams will supervise the process of preparation for the SPLM Third National Convention, including conducting primaries in the states and administrative areas. This move is crucial in shaping the candidates who will compete at constituency and other levels in the upcoming general elections.
With the country heading towards elections in December, Kordit urged SPLM members and leaders to leave Juba and return to their constituencies. He emphasized that the September 22 decision to dissolve the transitional government has shifted political responsibility back to voters, making it essential for party members to engage with the electorate.
Kordit stressed that the SPLM's goal is to ensure that voters choose their leaders and that those leaders remain accountable to the people. He specifically called on SPLM cadres, members, and leaders from Upper Nile, Unity, and Jonglei states, as well as Greater Pibor and Ruweng Administrative Areas, to return to their constituencies and participate in the primaries and congresses leading to the Third National Convention.
The mobilisation comes as the SPLM prepares for a major internal political exercise ahead of the planned national elections. Party primaries are expected to play a significant role in determining the candidates who will represent the party in the December 2026 general elections.
The SPLM's decision to deploy cadres to their constituencies and conduct internal primaries demonstrates the party's commitment to democratic processes and ensuring that its leaders are accountable to the people. This move is expected to enhance the party's chances in the upcoming general elections.
