The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has launched its South East Agro-Development Programme with a 200-hectare integrated model farm in Enugu State. Located at Nomeh Unataeze, Nkanu East Local Government Area, the pilot project aims to boost agricultural productivity, expand food production, and create job opportunities. The initiative is a collaboration between SEDC and the Enugu State Government to demonstrate a replicable model for modern agriculture in the South East region.
The integrated model farm brings together various agricultural components, including fodder production, dairy, poultry, fisheries, greenhouse production, processing, mechanisation, renewable energy, and practical agricultural training. This coordinated system is designed to showcase how different parts of the agricultural value chain can work together to create a more productive and sustainable system. Cliff Ogbede, Executive Director of Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development at SEDC, highlighted the project's innovative approach.
Ifeanyi Ossai, Deputy Governor of Enugu State, commended the partnership between the state government and SEDC, citing the project's potential to drive economic development in the region. He emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration in achieving development objectives, particularly in food production and economic diversification. The project is expected to create jobs, develop skills, support farmers, and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
The South East Agro-Development Programme is part of SEDC's broader strategy to use agriculture as a platform for food security, enterprise development, employment, skills acquisition, and regional economic growth. Mark Okoye, Managing Director/CEO of SEDC, explained that the project aims to redefine the region's approach to agriculture by building productive capacity and demonstrating the potential of integrated agriculture.
Okoye highlighted that the project's impact will be measured by its effects beyond the physical boundaries of the 200-hectare site. He cited examples of the project's potential impact, including young people acquiring practical skills, farmers accessing markets and technical support, and smallholder farmers increasing production.
