South African ultramarathon legend Louis Massyn recently participated in an informal 5km run at the Windhoek Parkrun in Namibia. Massyn, 75, who became the first person to complete 50 Comrades Marathons last year, joined the event on Saturday. He expressed his joy in simply taking part in running events, saying it is a highly enjoyable privilege. Massyn's visit to Namibia is part of his preparation for the Bachmus Coastal Marathon, scheduled to take place on October 3.
Massyn will be running the Bachmus Coastal Marathon from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay for the third time. He mentioned that he is struggling with his breathing due to the high altitude, having trained at sea level in his hometown of George, Western Cape. Despite this challenge, Massyn remains enthusiastic about his running career. His autobiography, '403 – The Louis Massyn Story', was published last year and is available in selected bookstores in Namibia.
The title of Massyn's autobiography refers to his permanent green Comrades number. Earlier this year, he faced a setback when he was unable to finish the Comrades 'up run' from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. However, this has not deterred him from continuing his running journey. Massyn is looking forward to the centenary edition of the 88km ultramarathon next year, where he aims to achieve his 51st finish.
In addition to his Comrades Marathons achievements, Massyn has also completed other prestigious marathons, including the Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York marathons. He has earned the World Marathon Majors Six-Star medal for his accomplishments. Massyn attributes his career as a medical representative for allowing him to participate in global running events.
Massyn's work as a medical representative also played a significant role in establishing his connection with Namibia. He chose Namibia as a 'green zone' country to spend time in due to its proximity to South Africa and low-risk status in terms of global safety rankings. This experience has allowed him to develop a fondness for the country.
At 75, Massyn continues to enjoy participating in running events, saying that speed used to matter to him but now he just appreciates the experience. He expressed his joy in running, saying "it's moer lekker." Massyn will be celebrating his 76th birthday with friends and family in George on October 24.
Looking ahead, Massyn plans to finish the Two Oceans ultramarathon in Cape Town for a 49th time in 2025 and aims to achieve his 50th finish in 2028. With his positive attitude and dedication to running, Massyn remains an inspiration to many in the athletic community.
