The South African police are seeking to reinstate nine murder charges against Bongani Mfanomncane Dlamini, who was arrested in connection with the 2021 killings of nine people in Sydenham. The charges were withdrawn by the State after prosecutors interviewed witnesses and conducted further investigations. According to Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, the decision to withdraw the charges was made after a thorough review of the case.
Dlamini was arrested on September 24, 2021, and made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrates' Court the following day. The matter was initially postponed to October 2 for an identification parade, legal representation, and a bail investigation. However, on September 29, the State withdrew all nine murder charges against him. The charge sheet stated that the decision to withdraw the charges was made after interviewing witnesses and discussing the matter with the control prosecutor.
The Sydenham massacre occurred in 2021, when six people were shot and killed at a house in the Palmiet Road informal settlement in Sydenham. Three more people were allegedly shot and killed in two separate incidents a short distance from the scene. The police have been working to bring the perpetrators to justice, and Dlamini's arrest was seen as a significant breakthrough in the case.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police had noted the withdrawal of the charges and were working to have them reinstated. He stated that the suspect was arrested through a warrant of arrest and that the police would study the court's reasons for the withdrawal and work with the prosecution to have the charges reinstated.
Netshiunda also revealed that Dlamini's arrest had led to another breakthrough in the investigation. The police had uncovered that another suspect, believed to be the mastermind and shooter in the 2021 Sydenham mass murder, is already serving a sentence for an unrelated murder. The requisition process for him to be formally charged is underway, and he will be brought to court soon.
The police have made significant progress in tackling various crimes in KwaZulu-Natal, including cash heists, mass killings, and gender-based violence. Since April 1, 35,145 suspects have been arrested for various crimes by police in the province. The police have also been working to address allegations of misconduct and corruption within their ranks.
One of the suspects previously linked to the mass killings is believed to have since died. The police are continuing to investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. The reinstatement of charges against Dlamini is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that those responsible for the Sydenham massacre are held accountable for their actions.
