South African mountaineer Angela Yeung recently attended the London premiere of 'Tenzing' at The Curzon Mayfair in London, England. The film tells the story of Tenzing Norgay's role in the first successful summit of Everest alongside Edmund Hillary in 1953. Yeung, a jewellery designer and humanitarian, was invited to the premiere through her sherpa, Dr Nima Namgyal, who appeared in the movie and supported her climbing expeditions.
Yeung is set to share her own climbing experiences and lessons learned in her forthcoming book, 'The Mountain of Courage'. The book will detail the lessons she's learned through climbing, including how she manifested climbing Everest, the support of those around her, and the history and culture of the Sherpa community. According to Yeung, the book revisits life lessons she's learned during her climbs, where she often had time to reflect on her experiences.
The film 'Tenzing', directed by Jennifer Peedom, offers a unique perspective on the historic achievement of Everest's first successful summit. The movie stars Tom Hiddleston as Hillary and Genden Phuntsok as Norgay, and features Dr Nima Namgyal, who served as the expedition doctor during production. Namgyal accompanied the actors on a six-day trek towards Everest base camp to help them prepare for their roles and adapt to the environment.
Yeung emphasized the importance of remaining focused after reaching the summit, citing the dangers of descending in treacherous conditions. She explained that many people die during descent, not during the climb to the top. This lesson is one of the many she has learned through her climbing experiences, which she will share in her book. Yeung's climbs are often linked to charitable causes, including her recent expedition to Mount Elbrus in Russia.
Yeung's climb of Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest peak, was linked to the Impilo Collection Foundation's 365 Dignity Project, which supports women who have survived gender-based violence and human trafficking. The initiative was inspired by a visit to Home of Hope for Girls in Cyrildene, Johannesburg, where the foundation distributed 8,849 bras. The project encourages donations of R365, or R1 a day, towards the dignity of women.
The 365 Dignity Project has grown into a larger initiative, with Yeung launching a fundraising appeal to support the cause. The project aims to provide dignity and support to women who have survived traumatic experiences. Yeung's charitable work is an integral part of her climbing expeditions, which often serve as opportunities to raise awareness and funds for important causes.
'Tenzing' will premiere in select cinemas on October 9, followed by a global release on Apple TV on October 16. Yeung's book, 'The Mountain of Courage', is expected to be released soon, offering a unique perspective on her climbing experiences and the lessons she's learned along the way.
