A Sony masterclass planned for October 16 will provide an opportunity for local storytellers to learn from experienced professionals. The masterclass follows a Kigali session that brought together Nairobi-based editor and director Kavila Matu and local creators. The session was organised by Rwanda Cinema Centre and Kwetu Film Institute, and provided a chance for the group to exchange ideas. The organisers described it as a “refreshing start to the week.”

Kavila Matu is a longtime collaborator of filmmaker Eric Kabera and British filmmaker Nick Hughes. Their work together includes 100 Days, a 2001 film directed by Hughes and produced by Hughes and Kabera, with Matu as editor. The film was one of the first feature productions made in Rwanda to portray the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This collaboration has resulted in several other projects, including Through My Eyes and Keepers of Memory.

Matu is visiting Rwanda for a production and met with local creators at the Kigali session. The session was an opportunity for Matu to share his expertise and learn from others. Rwanda Cinema Centre and Kwetu Film Institute have collaborated with Matu and Hughes on many of their major productions over the past 30 years. Their partnership has led to the creation of several films and projects that showcase Rwandan stories and talent.
