Somali Parliament Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur chaired the 21st meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Speakers’ Bureau in Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday. The meeting brought together regional lawmakers to discuss parliamentary cooperation and integration. As the current chairperson of the EAC Speakers’ Bureau, Abdulkadir led the discussions, which aimed to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and advance parliamentary diplomacy.
The meeting focused on exchanging experiences and ensuring that East African integration delivers tangible benefits for people across the region. Abdulkadir briefed participants on progress made by Somalia’s 11th Parliament, particularly in state-building, completion and approval of the Constitution, security, and the rule of law, public financial management, and economic development. He highlighted the significant legislative achievements of Somalia’s House of the People.
Abdulkadir reported that Somalia’s House of the People has approved more than 56 laws and 18 resolutions. He emphasized that the House’s vision is to fully fulfil its constitutional responsibilities, particularly legislation and oversight, serve the interests of the Somali people, and contribute to strengthening EAC cooperation and integration. The speaker stressed that the future of the EAC depends on strong cooperation, resilient institutions, and effective parliaments.
The speaker reiterated Somalia’s commitment to playing its full role in advancing regional cooperation and integration. He expressed hope that the EAC would continue to strengthen joint efforts toward a united, prosperous, and peaceful East African Community. Abdulkadir also announced Somalia’s readiness to host the 22nd EAC Speakers’ Bureau meeting in Mogadishu at the end of January 2027.
Somalia took over the leadership of the EAC Speakers’ Bureau in November 2025, succeeding Kenya after a one-year term led by Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. During Somalia’s leadership, the country aims to advance regional cooperation and integration. The EAC Speakers’ Bureau meeting in Arusha provided a platform for regional lawmakers to discuss key issues affecting the community.
The meeting in Arusha demonstrated Somalia’s growing role in regional affairs. As the chair of the EAC Speakers’ Bureau, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur is expected to play a key role in promoting parliamentary cooperation and integration. The EAC comprises six member states, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Somalia.
The next EAC Speakers’ Bureau meeting is scheduled to take place in Mogadishu in January 2027.
