Somali Magazine has announced that nominations are now open for the eighth edition of its 100 Most Influential Somali People Awards. The awards aim to spotlight entrepreneurs and leaders across the Somali diaspora who have demonstrated measurable impact over the past year. The nomination period, which began on October 1, 2026, will close on November 20, 2026.

The awards cover eight categories, including politics, business, sport, Islamic scholarship, activism, journalism, social influencing, and entertainment. According to Ridwan Yusuf Mohamud, the organizer of the awards, the goal is to recognise leadership throughout the global Somali diaspora. The eligibility for the awards is not limited to Somalia, extending to Somali communities in Kenya, other East African nations, and worldwide.

The Somali community in Kenya, particularly in Nairobi's Eastleigh district, has significant economic influence. Mohamud highlighted that daily M-Pay transactions in Eastleigh are estimated at up to KSh 5 billion. Eastleigh functions as a commercial hub for traders across East Africa, driven largely by Somali-owned wholesale, retail, logistics, money-transfer, and real-estate firms.

Somali-run enterprises have expanded beyond Eastleigh into other parts of Nairobi and Kenyan towns, contributing to job creation and tax revenue. The awards aim to promote entrepreneurship by publicly acknowledging achievers and providing role models for aspiring businesspeople. By recognising the achievements of Somali leaders and entrepreneurs, the awards seek to inspire and motivate others to make a positive impact.

The nomination process is straightforward, with forms available on Somali Magazine's online platform. Interested individuals can submit their nominations before the November 20 deadline. A shortlist will be prepared after the nomination period closes, and the final list of the 100 Most Influential Somali People will be revealed on December 10, 2026.
