The Sokoto State Government has taken steps to address the issue of low attendance by students and teachers in several schools across the state. This move was made during a briefing at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute of Qur’an and General Studies, Sokoto, where the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, gave a directive. The meeting reviewed reports from monitoring teams that visited schools across the state.
According to reports from two monitoring teams that visited schools last Wednesday, several schools recorded low student turnout, while some Quality Assurance officers assigned to monitor the schools were absent during the visits. This development comes amid continued restrictions on school operations in parts of the state due to security concerns. Some schools in the state remain closed, except those in Sokoto North and Sokoto South local government areas.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, has directed the Director of Quality Assurance, Muhammad Sani Usman, to take immediate steps to address the low attendance of students and teachers. He also directed teachers to ensure that school records were regularly updated and properly maintained with effect from this week. This move aims to improve attendance and supervision requirements in schools.
To ensure effective monitoring and accurate record-keeping, Ala directed the Director of Quality Assurance to engage the Association of Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) on introducing a teachers’ signing book. This book will record attendance and participation in lessons throughout the school day. The introduction of this book is expected to improve professional commitment among teachers and other school personnel.
Prof. Ala stressed the importance of effective monitoring, accurate record-keeping, regular attendance, and professional commitment among teachers and other school personnel. He charged directors, zonal directors, education secretaries, Quality Assurance officers, and other relevant officials to intensify supervision and promptly address identified challenges. This will help to improve the overall quality of education in the state.
The Sokoto State Government’s move to address low attendance in schools is a significant step towards improving education in the state. The government’s efforts to ensure that schools are safe and conducive for learning, despite security concerns, are ongoing. The state government is working to ensure that students and teachers attend school regularly, and that school records are properly maintained.
The directive to address low attendance in schools is part of the ongoing monitoring and supervision exercise by the ministry.
