Sokoto state in northwest Nigeria has witnessed a substantial reduction in insecurity, particularly in the activities of bandits who previously terrorized villagers, kidnapping for ransom and rustling cattle. The situation has improved due to Governor Ahmed Aliyu's deliberate investment in the welfare and logistics of security agencies operating in the state. This investment has boosted the morale of troops in the frontline, enabling them to effectively combat banditry and other criminal activities.
The Sokoto state government recently approved the procurement of 30 security operational vehicles at a cost of N1.59 billion to support security agencies in their fight against banditry. Since Governor Aliyu assumed office, the state government has been steadfast in its support for security agencies, procuring and distributing over 200 patrol vehicles and 62 armoured vehicles to strengthen their operational efficiency.
In addition to procuring vehicles, the administration has addressed the mobility gap that weakened the ability of security agencies to respond quickly to attacks in remote communities. The Sokoto State Community Guard Corps was established, a community-level security initiative equipped with vehicles and motorcycles to operate in 13 local government areas most affected by banditry. By September 2024, 20 Hilux vans and 710 motorcycles had been handed over to the Community Guard Corps for deployment.
The intervention allowed community guards to penetrate areas where conventional security agencies may not immediately reach, complementing rather than replacing the conventional security architecture. The administration's security policy has continued to define its approach, procuring and distributing 140 patrol vehicles to security agencies in 2025 and increasing allowances for personnel deployed to high-risk areas.
The government has also upgraded the DSS tracker system to 5G technology, provided motorcycles to DSS operatives, and pursued the construction of a military base in Illela Local Government Area to deepen security presence in frontline areas. Efforts were also made to operationalize an Air Force base in Sokoto, which is significant in the fight against banditry, as it relies on intelligence, surveillance, mobility, and capacity to move quickly between communities and difficult terrains.
The restoration and upward review of allowances for security personnel deployed to volatile areas is another crucial aspect. Security personnel deployed for prolonged periods in difficult and dangerous locations need more than equipment; their welfare affects morale and operational effectiveness. The governor has emphasized intelligence gathering and information sharing, identifying logistics, intelligence gathering, and intelligence sharing as areas to strengthen support for security agencies.
The administration has continued to support communities affected by attacks, providing relief to families that have lost breadwinners and demonstrating that government intervention does not end with the deployment of security personnel. The government has also connected security with development, pursuing youth empowerment and initiatives such as the Neighbourhood Initiative and Sokoto Marshall to provide productive engagements while supporting conventional security structures.
