An Information and Communication Technology lecturer at Abia State University and software developer, Juliet Chinenye Duru, has developed two artificial intelligence platforms to address challenges in agriculture and education in Nigeria. The platforms, AgriAI Insight and NaijaLearn-AI, were designed and built by Duru outside her jobs. They aim to provide locally tailored AI solutions to improve agricultural productivity and expand access to education.

AgriAI Insight is designed to help Nigerian farmers make informed planting decisions using data-driven yield predictions. The platform focuses on Nigeria's unique agricultural landscape, where many smallholder farmers rely on experience rather than data to determine planting patterns. It was built around Nigeria's six agro-climatic zones, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The AI model analyzes crop type, rainfall, soil quality, and fertilizer use to generate yield predictions that users can easily understand. Duru deliberately built an interpretable multivariate model instead of a black-box neural network, allowing farmers or extension officers to understand why the system makes a prediction. The platform operates through a FastAPI backend with a documented API and a React Native mobile application, deployed on Amazon Web Services.

Duru's second project, NaijaLearn-AI, focuses on improving educational access by providing students with a conversational AI tutor designed around the Nigerian curriculum and learning environment. The platform is free to use, requires no registration, and is optimized for low-bandwidth internet connections. NaijaLearn AI supports five languages: English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Nigerian Pidgin, making it accessible to learners across Nigeria's major linguistic groups.

According to Duru, millions of Nigerian learners lack tools built with their reality in mind, including their bandwidth, curriculum, and languages. Both platforms are products of Duru's academic research and software development efforts, reflecting a combination of scholarly research and practical technology deployment. The platforms demonstrate Duru's commitment to addressing specific challenges in Nigeria through technology.

The development of these platforms highlights the potential for AI to drive positive change in Nigeria's agriculture and education sectors. By providing farmers with data-driven insights and students with accessible learning tools, Duru's work has the potential to improve outcomes and increase opportunities for Nigerians. The platforms also demonstrate the importance of locally tailored solutions in addressing specific challenges.

Duru's achievement has the potential to inspire other developers and researchers to explore similar initiatives, leveraging technology to drive positive change in Nigeria. Her work serves as an example of the impact that individuals can have through innovation and dedication. The platforms are a testament to the potential for technology to drive development and improve lives in Nigeria.
