A resident of Merkindi in South Darfur has warned of the deteriorating living conditions in the area, citing a significant increase in food prices. Mفضل محمد told Radio Dabanga that the region has experienced a relatively better rainy season in some areas, but others have faced a severe shortage of rainfall, negatively impacting agricultural production. This, combined with a shortage of cash, has led to a substantial increase in the prices of basic goods.

The prices of staple foods have skyrocketed in Merkindi, with a sack of sorghum increasing to around 260,000 Sudanese pounds, while a sack of corn costs around 180,000 pounds. The price of a quintal of wheat has also surged to between 450,000 and 600,000 pounds. This sharp increase is attributed to the decline in local production. The situation has been further exacerbated by the rising prices of consumer goods, including sugar and soap.

Over the past week, the price of a sack of sugar has increased from 300,000 to 400,000 pounds, while a carton of soap has risen from 100,000 to 130,000 pounds. However, the prices of livestock have declined, with some cows now selling for around 1.1 million pounds, down from 1.5 million pounds two weeks ago. This decrease is largely due to the shortage of cash and families prioritizing their basic needs.

The situation in Merkindi is further complicated by the varying levels of rainfall across the region. While some areas have experienced a relatively better rainy season, others have faced significant challenges. The areas stretching from Merkindi, Kudem, and Demba in the west to Am Dagal have had a better rainy season, but regions east of Tere towards Nyala have faced a severe shortage of rainfall.

The decline in agricultural production and shortage of cash have had a devastating impact on the local economy. Many residents are struggling to access basic goods, and the situation is expected to worsen if prices continue to rise. The warning signs are ominous, with the potential for a more severe wave of price increases in the coming period.

The crisis in Merkindi highlights the challenges faced by communities in South Darfur, where conflict, displacement, and poverty have long been a reality. The situation demands attention from authorities and humanitarian organizations to address the pressing needs of the affected populations. The residents of Merkindi and surrounding areas require urgent assistance to mitigate the effects of the soaring prices and shortage of cash.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, residents of Merkindi are calling for urgent action to address the crisis. With prices showing no signs of decreasing, the living conditions in the region are likely to worsen, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.
