Vehicle brand Smart has launched the all-new Smart #2, a fully electric version of the compact city car that first hit the market 28 years ago. The brand is owned jointly by Mercedes-Benz and China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. The Smart #2 retains the original’s signature two-tone body colours and 2,746mm length, maximising interior space by pushing the wheels towards the corners.

The new Smart #2 will be available in three trims in the UK market: Pure, Premium, and a limited Couture Edition. All variants feature a bench-style seating arrangement, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen paired with an 8.8-inch driver display, and 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The entry-level Smart #2 Pure comes standard with several features, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, Smart Pilot Assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The Premium trim adds several features, including 11kW AC charging, a heated driver’s seat, and a comprehensive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) package. This package includes blind-spot detection, rear collision mitigation, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Premium trim also features a glass roof, heated faux-leather seats, and a seven-speaker sound system. Two-tone body colour finishes are available as an option for the Premium trim.

The limited-edition Smart #2 Couture Edition is available in Europe, limited to 999 units. It features Atelier White matt exterior paint with a Platinum Gold roof, 16-inch Lyra rims with gold details, and a glass roof. The Couture Edition also includes ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, wireless charging, navigation, and a numbered interior badge.

The Smart #2 range is powered by a rear-mounted 60kW electric motor delivering 130Nm of torque to the rear wheels. The 35.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides a claimed range of up to 290km. Using a DC fast charger, the Smart #2 can charge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes, making it convenient for long trips.

Safety features of the Smart #2 include the Tridion Cell Evo safety cell, seven airbags, and an ADAS package. Sales of the Smart #2 are expected to begin in 2027, with prices starting at £20,000, which is approximately R437,500. The Smart brand was previously available in South Africa from 2003 until 2019.

The Smart #2 is set to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market with its unique features and competitive pricing. With its compact size and advanced technology, the Smart #2 is an attractive option for city dwellers looking for a sustainable and practical mode of transportation.
