The Sierra Leone Teachers' Union (SLTU) has equipped its Kenema Regional Office with essential operational equipment to strengthen its regional structures and improve service delivery to teachers across the Eastern Region. The equipment, handed over on Saturday under the union's 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, includes 12 solar panels, a 12KVA inverter, a 15-kilowatt battery, a photocopier, printers, a scanner, a projector, a projection screen, chairs and a Bluetooth speaker. This initiative aims to address longstanding operational challenges and enhance the office's capacity to carry out its responsibilities.

The SLTU National President, Ibrahim Bankapoma Kargbo, stated that the intervention followed an assessment of the union's regional offices conducted by the Chief Trustee to identify their operational needs and determine areas requiring support. He highlighted some of the union's achievements, including a 45 per cent salary increase for teachers between 2023 and 2025, alongside the provision of medical and educational assistance, disaster relief, affordable loans and staff identification cards. These efforts demonstrate the union's commitment to improving teachers' welfare.

The Kenema Regional Office has pledged to ensure the effective use and proper management of the equipment to improve its operations and support teachers in the region. The office will utilize the equipment to enhance its service delivery, including providing support to teachers and addressing their concerns. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the region's education sector.

However, concerns have been raised about the slow pace of establishing sub-unions in the region. The National Council of Head Teachers in Sierra Leone (NaCoHT) and other stakeholders have called attention to the need to strengthen the union's structures at the local level. This issue requires attention to ensure the union's effectiveness in representing teachers' interests.

Addressing concerns over allegations that he intended to divide the union into regional groups, Kargbo dismissed the claims, explaining that his call was for members to elect competent individuals to leadership positions within the union. He reaffirmed the SLTU's commitment to advancing teachers' welfare, strengthening its institutional capacity and contributing to sustainable development in Sierra Leone's education sector.

The SLTU's efforts to improve service delivery to teachers are crucial in ensuring that educators receive the support they need to effectively perform their duties. The union's initiatives, including the provision of equipment and other forms of assistance, demonstrate its dedication to enhancing the education sector. The impact of these efforts will be closely monitored.

The SLTU's commitment to strengthening its regional structures and improving service delivery to teachers is a positive development in Sierra Leone's education sector. The union's efforts will contribute to the overall improvement of education in the country, and its initiatives will be closely watched by stakeholders.
