The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Hospital has received a donation of essential medical equipment and supplies from Sightsavers, an international development organisation. The donation includes a slit lamp, eye medications, and medical consumables. This is expected to strengthen the Hospital's ability to diagnose and treat various eye conditions, while expanding access to specialised eye care for police personnel and members of the public. The items were handed over on Friday, 6 November 2026, at the Officers' Mess, Police Headquarters, Kingtom.
Sightsavers Country Director, Madam Tiange Gondoe, said the support reflects the organisation's commitment to improving access to quality eye care and reducing preventable blindness and visual impairment in Sierra Leone. The slit lamp will enhance the diagnostic capacity of the Hospital's Eye Unit, while the donated medications and consumables will support the effective treatment of patients. This donation is a significant step towards improving eye care services in the country.
Commissioner Ismail Keita, Principal Staff Officer in the Office of the Inspector-General of Police, received the donation on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police. He said the intervention aligns with the Force's 2025-2029 Strategic Development Plan, particularly its focus on personnel welfare and improved healthcare services. Goal Five and Intervention Eight of the plan seek to improve medical services at the Kingtom Police Hospital and establish similar healthcare facilities at regional police headquarters.
Commissioner Keita commended Sightsavers for the support and assured the organisation that the donated items would be used for their intended purpose. He highlighted the importance of decentralising healthcare services to ensure that police personnel across the country have access to essential medical care, regardless of their duty stations. This will improve the overall health and wellbeing of police personnel.
Dr John Mumuneh Konteh, Deputy Director of Medical Services and Medical Superintendent of the SLP Hospital, emphasised the importance of partnerships in strengthening the hospital's healthcare capacity. He credited strategic collaborations facilitated by Inspector-General of Police, Mr William Fayia Sellu, with helping to build stronger relationships between the Police Hospital, healthcare institutions, and development partners.
The donation marks another step towards improving specialised healthcare delivery within the Sierra Leone Police and strengthening access to essential medical services for both officers and the wider public. The SLP Hospital Eye Unit will now be better equipped to diagnose and treat various eye conditions, reducing the risk of preventable blindness and visual impairment.
The partnership between Sightsavers and the Sierra Leone Police is a significant step towards improving healthcare services in the country. The donation is a testament to the organisation's commitment to improving access to quality eye care and reducing preventable blindness and visual impairment in Sierra Leone. The SLP Hospital Eye Unit will continue to provide specialised eye care services to police personnel and members of the public.
