In a move to support artisans from the Guiriko region, SITARAIL has introduced a free train service between Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouagadougou, specifically for participants of the Salon international de l’artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) 2026. The initiative, launched on October 28, 2026, aims to alleviate transportation difficulties faced by artisans, allowing them to focus on showcasing their products. The train will carry both artisans and their goods, with over 300 places available.
The free train service, dubbed the "train de l’artisanat," is an extension of SITARAIL's previous efforts to support culture and tourism in Burkina Faso. According to Alexis Ouédraogo, representing SITARAIL, the company has upgraded its support from providing just a collector for artisans' items to dedicating an entire train carriage for their use. This move is expected to greatly benefit artisans who previously struggled with the costs and logistics of transporting their goods to Ouagadougou.
Over 100 artisans have already boarded the train for this edition of SIAO, with approximately 282 tonnes of goods being transported. The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the artisans, who see it as a significant relief. Ali Prospère Traoré, promoter of Pro Couture, highlighted the substantial burden that transportation costs previously placed on artisans, praising SITARAIL for addressing this issue.
Mariam Sawadogo, a couturière and exposante at the Village artisanal, also expressed her satisfaction with the free transport service. She noted that not only is the transportation of goods and persons free, but it also ensures that all items arrive at the destination on time. This logistical support allows artisans to concentrate on promoting and selling their products during the event.
The regional authorities have welcomed SITARAIL's initiative as a valuable contribution to the development of craftsmanship and the promotion of Burkinabé cultural heritage. Souleymane Nakanabo, secretary general of the Guiriko region, representing the governor, praised the artisans for their role in showcasing the region's talents and encouraged them to maximize their participation in SIAO 2026.
Beyond the immediate benefits of free transportation, the "train de l’artisanat" is seen as a strategic move to enhance the competitiveness of Guiriko's artisans in the market. By reducing logistical costs and challenges, SITARAIL's initiative is expected to help artisans secure more business and promote their products effectively.
SITARAIL's engagement in supporting major cultural events in Burkina Faso underscores its commitment to contributing to the country's development. Through such initiatives, the company, part of the Africa Global Logistics (AGL) group, demonstrates its dedication to partnering with authorities and stakeholders in the cultural sector.
