Singapore Airlines has been crowned the world's best airline in 2026, marking the sixth time in 25 years that the Asian carrier has received the prestigious title. The airline received its trophy at a ceremony held at the Langham Hotel in London. This year's win comes after a challenging period for the aviation industry, with factors such as geopolitical conflicts, climate change, and rising fuel prices affecting operations.
The Skytrax Awards, often referred to as the "Oscars of Aviation," recognize airlines that excel globally and regionally. Singapore Airlines previously won the top spot in 2023 and 2018, and several times in the 2000s. The airline's CEO, Goh Choon Phong, attributed the award to the "dedication and professionalism" of its employees. The airline also won awards for its economy class and in-flight catering in economy class.
Qatar Airways, which held the top spot in 2025, came in second this year, followed by Cathay Pacific Airways, All Nippon Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Emirates in the top six. British Airways, a previous winner, did not make it to the top 20 this year. US airlines were also absent from the top 20, with Air Canada being the only North American carrier to feature in the list, ranking 17th.
The Skytrax Awards are based on a global passenger satisfaction survey. Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, noted that the top spot has been largely dominated by a small group of seven airlines over the years, most of which still rank among the top 20. Despite challenges facing the aviation industry, Plaisted believes that the passenger experience continues to improve, driven by intense competition among airlines.
Other notable winners include Qatar Airways, which was named the best airline in the Middle East, and Cathay Pacific, which won awards for its cabin crew and first-class lounge. STARLUX, a Taiwanese carrier, was recognized for its clean cabins and was awarded five-star status by Skytrax. Air France won the award for best first class, while EVA Air excelled in the premium economy category.
In the low-cost carrier category, the top five spots went to AirAsia, Scoot, Vueling, Eurowings, and Iberia Express. Bangkok Airways was named the best airline in Asia and the best regional airline globally. Ethiopian Airlines topped the list in Africa, LATAM in South America, Turkish Airlines in Europe, and Air Canada in North America.
The aviation industry is witnessing increased competition, particularly in the premium segment, with airlines investing heavily in high-end products to attract high-budget travelers. Mark Nasr, EVP of Air Canada, noted that airlines that can command a premium for their products and services may be better positioned to absorb rising costs, such as increasing fuel prices.
