The municipal government of Siguiri has organized a meeting with local leaders to discuss the implementation of government decisions aimed at stopping artisanal and semi-industrial mining activities. The meeting, which brought together quarter, district, and sector heads, as well as youth leaders, sought to obtain formal commitments from local authorities to ensure strict adherence to the measures taken by the state.
According to Malamine Traoré, third deputy mayor and spokesperson for the commune, the meeting aimed to secure formal commitments from local leaders to enforce the government's decisions. Traoré emphasized that the commune would not remain indifferent to state decisions and that any decisions taken by the authorities would be applied to the letter.
The third deputy mayor announced the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to ensure that the commitments made by local leaders are enforced. The commitments will be recorded in three separate documents, intended for the concerned leaders, the commune, and the supervisory authority. Traoré also warned that control missions would be carried out in the quarters, districts, and sectors to verify the effective application of the commitments.
Oumar Mama Keita, president of the district council and spokesperson for the 16 district presidents of the urban commune of Siguiri, stated that this mobilization is part of efforts to convey the message of the authorities. He specified that it is the third meeting organized in two weeks around this issue and called on the population to support the implementation of the government decision.
Keita stressed that the government decision concerns no one in particular and is not directed against anyone, and that all artisanal and semi-industrial mining activities must be stopped immediately. He also called for the departure of foreign nationals present in mining sites, citing Senegalese and Burkinabé nationals.
The municipal authorities of Siguiri aim to strengthen awareness, hold local actors accountable, and ensure the application of government measures in a context marked by concerns related to environmental degradation and mining exploitation.
