The Congolese military has reported a significant decrease in the activity of the Mobondo militia in the Grand Bandundu region, located in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the captain Anthony Mwalushayi, director of communication for the 11th military region, the militia's activity has sensibly receded, with several villages liberated and populations gradually returning to their localities.

Despite this progress, Mwalushayi warned that vigilance is still necessary to prevent any attempts by the militia to reorganize. He emphasized that pockets of resistance remain, and some elements are seeking to regroup. The captain specifically mentioned the southeastern part of the Kwamouth territory, where some combatants are allegedly led by an individual known as Cobra.

According to Mwalushayi, Cobra's elements may not be engaging in the same level of violence as before, but they continue to exert pressure on the population by imposing taxes to access or exploit fields. The military spokesperson also cautioned against Mobondo leaders who, after joining the disarmament process, return to the field under the pretext of sensitizing their former combatants.

Mwalushayi stressed that using peace processes as a cover to return to the field and reconstitute parallel authority is unacceptable. He emphasized that peace requires disarmament, respect for state authority, and a return to civilian life. The military has so far prioritized dialogue and sensitization in dealing with Cobra, with several delegations attempting to convince him to join the peace process.

Mwalushayi warned that if Cobra resists and chooses the path of violence and parallel authority, he will have to face the consequences. He reiterated that the message remains the same: for Cobra to seize the offered opportunity and genuinely join the peace process. The spokesperson for Ngemba operations also highlighted the importance of prioritizing sensitization.

Several conflicts in Grand Bandundu, according to Mwalushayi, originate from misunderstandings between communities, land conflicts, or customary disputes. He concluded that the best military operation is sometimes one that can be avoided. The situation in Grand Bandundu remains a focus for the Congolese military, with efforts aimed at consolidating peace and stability in the region.

The developments in Grand Bandundu reflect the broader context of the Democratic Republic of Congo's efforts to address insecurity and promote peace. The government has been working to support initiatives that foster stability and address the root causes of conflicts.
