Kenyan politician Edwin Sifuna is scheduled to launch the headquarters of the Linda Mwananchi Movement and his 2027 presidential campaign in Nairobi on Friday. The event, set to take place in Lavington, marks a significant milestone for the movement, which was previously known as The Equitable Party (TEP). Sifuna was chosen as the movement's leader and presidential candidate in September.
The launch will also see the announcement of key national officials, although the full list will be released later to allow other members to join. Several prominent politicians are expected to be given significant roles, including Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, and former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo.
The movement's transformation into the Linda Mwananchi Movement follows Sifuna's departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he served as secretary general. Recent research by TIFA revealed that 15% of respondents support Sifuna's potential presidential bid, with President William Ruto garnering 24% support.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement aims to address the concerns of ordinary citizens, including youth unemployment, challenges faced by farmers, taxes on small businesses, and the cost of education and healthcare. The movement seeks to increase the involvement of youth and women in decision-making processes and promote accountability, citizen service, and respect for the Constitution.
In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the movement plans to open offices in all 47 counties by December and establish an online system for aspiring candidates to submit their applications. A national delegates' conference (NDC) is scheduled for November 13 to finalize the name change and confirm the new leadership.
The movement is also expected to engage in talks with other opposition leaders about potential collaborations before the 2027 elections. This follows similar initiatives by other politicians, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, who have launched their own parties.
The launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters and Sifuna's presidential campaign comes as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. The event is expected to be attended by various dignitaries and supporters, and will likely have significant implications for the country's political landscape.
