The Equitable Party (TEP), led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is rebranding to the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) after its National Executive Council approved the change. This move paves the way for TEP to begin the process of adopting the new name that has featured prominently in Sifuna's mobilisation efforts. The decision was made during a meeting on Wednesday, and the Registrar of Political Parties has also approved changes to TEP officials' names.

Sifuna launched TEP in Nairobi on Sunday as a temporary political vehicle for the wider movement ahead of the 2027 General Election. He indicated that TEP would be rebranded as the Linda Mwananchi Movement, with the new identity expected to promote politics centred on ideas, accountability, service, and constitutionalism. The party aims to address challenges facing ordinary Kenyans, including difficulties affecting farmers, young people seeking employment, and families struggling with education and healthcare costs.

The proposed rebranding revives a dispute over the Linda Mwananchi name, with another applicant, Charles Wanyonyi, requesting priority for his application for the name Linda Mwananchi, Party of Kenya. Wanyonyi claims he submitted his application on February 24, but the Registrar had previously rejected it due to similarities with the slogan "Linda Mkenya, Boresha Kenya" and public-interest considerations. The Registrar approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement on October 1.

The rebranding comes just days before political parties participating in the 2027 election must submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission by October 15. If the proposed changes are completed, TEP will cease to be the identity of Sifuna's political vehicle, paving the way for the Linda Mwananchi Movement to become the platform for his wider political project.

Sifuna's decision to rebrand TEP follows his fallout with the ODM party. He had attempted to establish a new political vehicle but was unsuccessful, leading to the formation of TEP as a temporary measure. The Linda Mwananchi Movement is expected to provide a more permanent and inclusive platform for Sifuna's political ambitions.

The Registrar of Political Parties has cleared an administrative requirement for the rebranding by approving changes to TEP officials' names. This move allows the party to proceed with the transition, which is expected to be completed before the 2027 General Election. Sifuna's team has been working to ensure a smooth transition and minimise disruptions to the party's operations.

The Linda Mwananchi Movement is expected to play a significant role in the 2027 General Election, with Sifuna positioning it as an alternative to the establishment. The party's focus on ideas, accountability, and service is expected to resonate with voters seeking change. Key points:
