Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced plans to rename The Equitable Party (TEP) the Linda Mwananchi Movement. This move comes after a tribunal ruling cleared the way for the movement to reserve its name. Sifuna made the announcement on Sunday, October 4, as his allies unveiled him as the leader of Linda Mwananchi in Nairobi. The planned rebranding is set to take place in the coming days.
The Registrar of Political Parties, John Lorionokou, approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name in a letter dated Thursday, October 1. This approval followed a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal that overturned Lorionokou's August 7 refusal to reserve the name. The reservation does not register Linda Mwananchi as a political party but secures the name as the group proceeds with its plans to rebrand TEP.
Sifuna stated that Linda Mwananchi had built its identity through rallies across the country and that the party would now take on the movement's name. He thanked Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, activist Pauline Njoroge, and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo for leading the appeal, alongside the lawyers who represented the group before the tribunal. Sifuna expressed gratitude to the legal team that initially doubted whether they would win the case.
The movement turned to TEP after the Registrar of Political Parties rejected an earlier plan to rebrand the United Democratic Party (UDP). Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya had previously mentioned that Sifuna would use UDP as his political vehicle for the 2027 election. Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi clarified that Sunday's event was meant to announce the party adopted by the movement and was not its main launch.
Sifuna emphasized that the group now has a brand and a party, stating, “As we stand here, we have our brand, and we have our party.” The Linda Mwananchi Movement has been building its identity through various rallies and events across the country. The rebranding of TEP to Linda Mwananchi Movement is seen as a significant step in the group's political journey.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal's ruling in favor of the Linda Mwananchi Movement has paved the way for the group to solidify its presence in Kenyan politics. Sifuna's announcement has generated interest among political observers and supporters of the movement. The rebranding exercise is expected to be completed in the coming days, marking a new chapter for the group.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement's rebranding from TEP is a strategic move aimed at repositioning the group in the Kenyan political landscape. With the name reservation secured, the group is set to intensify its political activities and engagements. Key stakeholders and supporters have welcomed the development, expressing optimism about the group's prospects in future elections.
