Sierra Leone has made a notable impact at an international culinary event held in The Gambia, securing a gold medal in Cake Decoration and finishing second in the Best Chef competition. This achievement was announced by Chief Minister Dr David Moinina Sengeh, who highlighted the country's growing presence in the food and hospitality industry. The competition, which drew participants from 16 countries, was a significant platform for Sierra Leonean chefs to showcase their skills.

A team of Sierra Leonean chefs represented the country at the competition following a national selection process organised through the Sierra Leone Chef Association and the Faculty of Applied Technology and Arts (FATA). According to Chief Minister Sengeh, the team performed exceptionally well, emerging among competitors from 16 countries participating in three different categories. The gold medal in Cake Decoration and the second place in the Best Chef competition are notable achievements that bring recognition to Sierra Leone's culinary industry.

The two award-winning participants have inspiring backgrounds, reflecting their dedication and passion for their craft. The Cake Decoration gold medallist previously worked as a taxi driver, while the chef who secured second place in the Best Chef competition had returned to Sierra Leone from Turkey with the aim of contributing to development back home. Their stories highlight the diverse paths that can lead to success in the culinary industry.

Chief Minister Sengeh also shared his experience judging the Sierra Leone Jollof War, Country Dish and Cake Decoration competitions approximately three weeks before the international event. These competitions were organised to identify talented chefs who would represent Sierra Leone abroad. Sengeh congratulated the participating chefs and acknowledged the individuals and organisations that supported their participation, describing them as part of the country’s emerging ‘Delivery Generation’.

The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of food beyond its traditional role, describing it as an expression of culture and tradition as well as an important contributor to economic development. This perspective underscores the potential of Sierra Leone's culinary industry to drive economic growth and promote cultural exchange. By supporting and nurturing this sector, the country can unlock new opportunities for development.

The achievement of the Sierra Leonean chefs is a testament to the country's growing presence in the international culinary scene. The gold and silver medals won at the competition serve as a motivation for other chefs and aspiring culinary professionals in Sierra Leone. As the country continues to develop its food and hospitality industry, such achievements will likely play a significant role in promoting Sierra Leone's cultural and economic interests.

The recognition of Sierra Leone's culinary talents also highlights the importance of initiatives that support the development of the country's food and hospitality sector. By investing in culinary education and training, and providing opportunities for chefs to compete and showcase their skills, Sierra Leone can build a thriving industry that contributes to the country's economic growth and cultural exchange.
