The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has provided training to ten officers from the Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) on the proper use of communication handsets. This training, which took place at the Senior Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, Freetown, aims to improve coordination during patrols and other field operations. The programme is part of ongoing cooperation between the SLP and SLID to strengthen operational efficiency and inter-agency collaboration.

The training programme was designed to equip selected immigration personnel with the skills needed to effectively operate communication devices while carrying out their duties in the field. The Head of Police Communications, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Cecilia Akibo-Cole, highlighted the importance of responsible use of communication equipment in official assignments. She urged participants to handle the devices with care and ensure they are used strictly for operational purposes.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alpha Kamara, the Head of Training at the SLP, described the exercise as part of a long-standing partnership between the police and immigration services. He noted that similar training sessions have been conducted in the past to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions. DSP Kamara encouraged the trainees to apply the knowledge gained in their daily operations, especially during patrol duties.

The programme included hands-on practical sessions, where participants were trained on the correct handling and operation of communication handsets in real-life field scenarios. This approach allowed the trainees to gain valuable experience and build confidence in using the equipment. The training is expected to enhance the ability of SLID personnel to communicate effectively while performing their duties.

Representing Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, the Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) John Martin Senesie, emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation between the SLP and SLID. He noted that such joint training programmes contribute to stronger institutional coordination and improved operational effectiveness across the security sector. AIG Senesie also urged participants to act professionally and responsibly when using the equipment.

The training is part of the SLP’s continued support to partner agencies to build operational capacity. The initiative aims to enhance the ability of SLID personnel to communicate effectively while performing their duties, particularly during patrol operations. The SLP and SLID have been working together to strengthen their collaboration and improve their operational effectiveness.

The collaboration between the SLP and SLID is expected to lead to improved security and coordination in Sierra Leone. The training of immigration officers on communication handset use is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Key aspects of the training include the proper handling and operation of communication devices, responsible use of equipment, and practical application in real-life scenarios.
