Sidama Bank has begun trading on the Ethiopia Securities Exchange (ESX) Main Market, marking a significant milestone for the country's young equities market. The bank's shares opened at Br1,300, with only nine shares changing hands during its debut. This listing brings the total number of companies on the ESX to seven, with six of them being banks. Ethio Telecom remains the only non-financial company listed on the Main Market.

Sidama Bank's transformation from a microfinance institution in 1994 to a commercial bank in 2022 has culminated in its listing on the ESX. The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) registered 1,447,002 existing Sidama Bank shares ahead of the listing. Unlike a conventional initial public offering, this listing involved the admission of existing shares for secondary market trading, allowing shareholders to buy and sell their holdings through the exchange.

The ESX has experienced a surge in activity this year, with five companies added to the market in just over five months. Awash Bank joined in April, followed by Ethio Telecom in May, Abay Bank in June, and Bank of Abyssinia in July. Sidama Bank's admission further solidifies the banking sector's presence on the exchange, reflecting their role in the early development of Ethiopia's capital market.

The ESX is providing banks with a platform for public trading while gradually expanding the range of securities available to investors. More companies are moving towards listing, with the ESX stating that several major banks and other issuers are progressing through the admission process. This includes regulatory approval, securities registration, and prospectus publication.

Sidama Bank's listing is a significant addition to the exchange, which is still in its early stages. The growing pipeline of potential listings points to a broader expansion of Ethiopia's formal capital market. The concentration of listings in the banking sector highlights the crucial role lenders are playing in the development of the capital market.

The ESX entered 2026 with only two listed companies, Wegagen Bank and Gadaa Bank, following its launch in 2025. The rapid increase in listings this year indicates a positive trend for the exchange. As more companies move towards listing, the ESX is expected to continue playing a vital role in Ethiopia's capital market development.

Sidama Bank's debut on the ESX marks another milestone in the growth of Ethiopia's equities market. With a growing pipeline of potential listings, the exchange is poised for further expansion. The listing of Sidama Bank and other companies is expected to contribute to the development of a more robust and diverse capital market in Ethiopia.
