A devastating road accident occurred on Thursday, October 23, 2026, on the Gombe-Billiri road in Gombe State, Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of seven people. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which involved a Daf trailer that lost control due to brake failure. The trailer crashed into two Volkswagen Golf cars and five motorcycles at Tashan Magariya Junction Kumo in Akko local government area.

According to the Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Samson Kaura, the accident involved 25 people, including 14 male adults, three female adults, and eight children. Eleven people sustained varying degrees of injuries, ranging from compound fractures to lacerations and bruises. All those involved in the crash were taken to public hospitals in Kumo for medical care, and the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospitals' mortuary.

The FRSC attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure on the part of the Daf trailer, which was traveling from Gombe to Yola. The incident highlights the need for road safety measures, particularly in built-up areas and along busy roads. Mr. Kaura advised motorists to observe speed limits to minimize the severity of injuries and damage in the event of a crash.

In addition to advising motorists, Mr. Kaura urged authorities and stakeholders to consider relocating markets situated along highways or fencing them off to prevent traders and pedestrians from moving directly onto the roads. He emphasized the need for safe pedestrian crossings, including footbridges, and encouraged people to use them when crossing highways.

The FRSC also advised motorcycle operators to avoid parking along the roadside, particularly on market days, such as the Kumo Market Day, when traffic and pedestrian activities increase. Parking motorcycles along the roadside is considered extremely dangerous, as it exposes operators and other road users to serious risks.

Mr. Kaura stressed the importance of taking road safety measures seriously to prevent further accidents and protect lives. He appealed to motorists, motorcycle operators, market traders, pedestrians, and relevant authorities to prioritize road safety. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and caution on the roads.

The Gombe State FRSC is working to prevent similar accidents in the future by promoting road safety awareness and enforcing safety regulations. The public is urged to report any concerns or hazardous road conditions to the FRSC to help prevent accidents and ensure safe transportation.
