President John Dramani Mahama has announced that seven companies have been shortlisted to build the Keta Port, a major development project in the Volta Region of Ghana. Speaking at the Hogbetsotso grand durbar in Anloga, Mahama said the seven firms were selected from 47 bidders that had expressed interest in becoming strategic partners with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). The shortlisted companies will now proceed to the next stage, which involves completing the designs and arranging financing for the project.

In addition to the Keta Port project, Mahama outlined plans for a 200-acre light industrial enclave at Weta, dedicated to textiles and garments. The Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank) has been commissioned to develop the enclave, which is expected to create 3,000 jobs initially and grow to 10,000 jobs when fully operational. This initiative follows the commissioning of the Northshore Apparel Ghana factory at Savelugu in the Northern Region, which currently employs over 2,300 workers.

Mahama also addressed concerns over tidal erosion in the area, announcing an additional GH¢250 million allocated in the 2027 Budget for the Blekusu Phase Two Coastal Protection Project. This project, which began in 2025, aims to protect communities from erosion and flooding. The President emphasized the government's commitment to completing the project without interruption.

The Blekusu Phase Two project is part of a larger effort to protect coastal communities in Ghana. Mahama announced an additional GH¢685 million to start coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA). This project will combine breakwaters, groynes, lagoon rehabilitation, and livelihood support for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Mahama also provided updates on other development projects in the Volta Region. The stalled Sogakope–Agodome–Keta Water Project is set to resume after the government signed a memorandum of understanding with contractors in October. The Ho–Denu highway is expected to be completed in 2027, while procurement is underway for the Miotso–Aflao stretch.

Furthermore, Mahama announced progress on several market and infrastructure projects. The Anloga 24-hour market is on track, and land and designs are ready for a US$30 million Chinese-grant Aflao Ashigame market. Additionally, land has been inspected for a University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) School of Pharmacy.

The President emphasized the importance of protecting mangroves and coastal vegetation, urging chiefs and residents to play a role in preserving the environment. With these announcements, the government aims to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve the living standards of residents in the Volta Region.
