Seplat Energy Plc has urged for more investments in Nigeria's gas sector to harness the country's enormous natural gas resources. The company's Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Effiong Okon, stated that Nigeria has over 215 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves. However, the actual value of these resources can only be realized through sustained investments in production, processing, transportation, and utilization infrastructure.
Energy poverty remains a significant challenge in Africa, with approximately 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lacking access to electricity. Okon emphasized that gas reserves alone do not power homes or factories; they create value only when produced and reliably delivered to consumers. He highlighted the need to convert Nigeria's vast gas endowment into tangible economic growth, industrial development, and energy access for millions of people.
Okon commended the Federal Government's efforts to improve investment conditions in the gas sector, particularly initiatives addressing legacy debts in the gas-to-power value chain. These efforts have improved the bankability of gas projects. He also welcomed recent final investment decisions on major energy projects, citing the commencement of operations on the OB3 gas pipeline as a significant milestone for Nigeria's gas industry.
The Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has played a crucial role in creating a more transparent and investor-friendly environment for gas investments. Institutions like the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) have helped strengthen regulatory certainty and close infrastructure gaps in the sector.
Nigeria's strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea provides a unique advantage in serving both regional and international gas markets, including Europe. The country can also support growing energy demand across Africa. Okon highlighted Seplat Energy's significant investments in gas infrastructure over the past decade, including the 375 MMscfd Oben Gas Plant, the 90 MMscfd Sapele Gas Plant, and the 300 MMscfd ANOH Gas Plant.
These investments have reinforced Seplat Energy's position as one of Nigeria's leading domestic gas suppliers. The company's efforts aim to drive industrialization, strengthen energy security, and position Nigeria as Africa's leading gas powerhouse. Okon's remarks were made at the Gas Investment Forum in Lagos, where he was represented by Mr. Okechukwu Mba, Director of Gas & New Energy at Seplat Energy.
With sustained investments in Nigeria's gas sector, the country can unlock its vast natural gas resources and create tangible economic growth. The investments will also help address energy poverty and provide energy access to millions of people. Seplat Energy's push for more investments in the gas sector is a step towards achieving these goals and positioning Nigeria as a major player in the African gas market.
