In a significant boost to education in Senegal, 410 top students from five primary schools and one middle school in Soudiane village, Djilass commune, Fatick, have received educational kits worth over 800,000 Fcfa. The kits, comprising essential school supplies, were distributed by Ndèye Sagne, founder of the "À l'Africaine Waxwoodin" initiative, on November 1, 2026, at Soudiane Thiéléme primary school. This initiative aims to promote education and support underprivileged students.
The educational kits, consisting of 360 for primary school students and 50 for middle school students, were made possible through the "Éduquer et entreprendre, c'est investir dans l'éducation" project. Ndèye Sagne, an expert in environmental and social management at the Program for Supporting Senegalese Communes and Agglomerations (Pacasen), launched this initiative through her structure, "À l'Africaine Waxwoodin". This is the second edition of the project, which focuses on promoting education, particularly for girls from disadvantaged families.
The ceremony was attended by students, parents, and teachers, who welcomed the initiative. Abdou Faye, director of Soudiane Thiéléme school, expressed gratitude, highlighting that the educational materials will help students from underprivileged backgrounds start their academic year on a positive note. The initiative prioritizes promoting girls' education, with all 50 middle school beneficiaries being girls. Ndèye Sagne aims to double the number of beneficiaries to 100 girls in the next edition.
Ndèye Sagne's initiative seeks to instill a culture of excellence in schools, particularly in her home village of Soudiane Thiéléme. To achieve this, she plans to reward the school that achieves the best results in the upcoming Certificate of Elementary Education (Cfee) exam. Soudiane Thiéléme school had a 100% pass rate in the previous edition. The goal is to expand the initiative, increasing the number of educational kits from 410 to 1000 in the future.
The "À l'Africaine Waxwoodin" initiative aligns with efforts to improve education in Senegal. Recently, other educational institutions and organizations have launched initiatives to support students and enhance the learning environment. For instance, the University of Saint-Louis's Student Union and the Cadre de Vie have signed a convention to create a more welcoming campus.
Ndèye Sagne's commitment to education and her community is commendable. Her initiative demonstrates the impact that individuals and organizations can have on promoting education and supporting underprivileged students. By prioritizing girls' education and fostering a culture of excellence, the "À l'Africaine Waxwoodin" initiative sets a positive precedent for future projects.
As Senegal continues to focus on education, initiatives like "À l'Africaine Waxwoodin" contribute significantly to the country's development. The distribution of educational kits and the promotion of girls' education will likely have a lasting impact on the students and the community. With plans to expand, Ndèye Sagne's initiative may inspire other organizations to support education in Senegal.
