In Senegal, specialists are calling for the creation of a regional geriatrics center in Kaolack to enhance the care of elderly individuals in the central region. This appeal was made by Professor Mamadou Koumé, head of the geriatrics department at Fann Regional Hospital, during free medical consultations organized for seniors in Kaolack, Koutal, and Guinguinéo. The consultations were part of the "Aging with HIV" project.
The "Aging with HIV" project, in collaboration with its partners, provided medical consultations to over 500 elderly individuals in the three locations over three days. The project aims to ensure that elderly individuals have access to the management of chronic diseases. Professor Koumé, who is also the coordinator of the project in Kaolack, highlighted the importance of this initiative in addressing the healthcare needs of the elderly.
For elderly individuals with mobility issues, a mobile team comprising a geriatrician and a nurse conducted home visits, providing consultations to 34 seniors. The medical teams identified various chronic pathologies, including cardiovascular diseases, urological conditions, and hypertension, as well as geriatric syndromes related to neurocognitive disorders, depression, and fall risks.
The identified health issues underscore the need for specialized care for the elderly in the region. Professor Koumé emphasized that a regional geriatrics center in Kaolack would provide integrated care for elderly individuals across the central region. This center would be equipped to manage the complex health needs of the elderly, improving their overall quality of life.
Dr. Assane Sall, a geriatrician and coordinator of the medical team, stressed the importance of family involvement in elderly care. He encouraged families not to attribute all health issues to old age and to empower elderly individuals to take an active role in their aging process rather than being passive recipients of care.
