The Senegalese government, through the Fonds d'appui à la stabulation (Fonstab), has launched an initiative to boost sheep reproduction and fattening in the country. On October 3, 2026, the Minister of Livestock, Ousmane Diagne, presided over a ceremony in Kaolack, where over 500 million FCFA was injected into cooperatives and economic interest groups (GIE). This program aims to strengthen sheep production and the capacities of actors in the sector.

The initiative is a partnership between Fonstab, the National Office for Vocational Training (ONFP), and Heifer International. It focuses on three main areas: training, financing, and follow-up. The goal is to improve the production and incomes of sheep farmers, as well as the valorization of resources. Mme Diouf, the general administrator of Fonstab, stated that the fund has financed 5,549 projects to date, totaling 21.4 billion FCFA.

The program has trained 750 beneficiaries in areas such as sheep reproduction and fattening, farm management, and animal feed. The initiative also emphasizes fodder crops, animal health, and marketing. According to Mme Diouf, the program's approach is designed to make beneficiaries self-sufficient. The financing provided will support the development of their activities.

Minister Ousmane Diagne praised the initiative, saying it will increase national production, improve farmers' incomes, and better valorize resources. He urged beneficiaries to respect their commitments, particularly regarding repayment. Diagne emphasized that each successful project and repaid financing will enable other young people, women, and cooperatives to access the program.

The program is part of a broader effort to modernize Senegal's livestock sector. The government aims to strengthen national production and intensify modernization efforts. Fonstab's initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the sector, improving the livelihoods of farmers and contributing to the country's economic growth.

The injection of over 500 million FCFA into the sheep reproduction and fattening sector is a significant boost to the industry. The program's focus on training, financing, and follow-up will help ensure its success. With the support of partners like ONFP and Heifer International, Fonstab is well-positioned to make a lasting impact.

The success of this program will be closely watched, as it has the potential to serve as a model for similar initiatives in other sectors. With 5,549 projects financed to date, Fonstab has demonstrated its capacity to support entrepreneurship and economic development in Senegal. The impact of this program on the country's livestock sector and economy will be significant.
