Senegal is set to kick off the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, marking the first time an Olympic event will be held in Africa. The games, which begin on Saturday, will feature around 2,700 young athletes aged 14 to 17 competing until November 13. The events will take place in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, a beach resort.

The Youth Olympic Games will include a spectacular opening ceremony featuring hundreds of dancers celebrating Senegalese and African culture. The event's motto, "Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates," reflects the country's enthusiasm for hosting the games. Thomas Dieme, a Senegalese student, expressed his excitement, saying it's a great opportunity for Senegal and Africa to discover new sports and welcome other cultures.

Several celebrities, including French actor Omar Sy and Senegalese Italian TikTok star Khaby Lame, are expected to attend the opening ceremony. Both Sy and Lame have been appointed as ambassadors for the games. The mascot, Ayo, a young lion wearing a traditional Fulani hat, represents "joy" in Yoruba, a language spoken in Nigeria and neighboring West African countries.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is scheduled to declare the games open at 6:30 p.m. local time at the Diamniadio stadium. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry and some heads of state are expected to be present. The Youth Olympics are a smaller competition than the Summer Olympics, with 153 medal events across 25 sports, including athletics, swimming, and 3-x-3 basketball.

The games will feature several sports making their Youth Olympic debuts, including Baseball5, Wushu, and coastal rowing beach sprint. Beach wrestling will also be part of the games, paying homage to Senegalese wrestling, the country's national sport. The first refugee team at a Youth Olympics will field six athletes based in Kenya and Uganda, competing in track and field, judo, and taekwondo.

Dakar was initially set to host the games in 2022, but the coronavirus pandemic caused a four-year delay. The Youth Olympics have been held since the first summer edition in Singapore in 2010. This event marks a significant milestone for Senegal and Africa, providing a platform for young athletes to compete and interact with different cultures.

The 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar will bring together teenage athletes from around the world, promoting unity, friendship, and sportsmanship. With its unique blend of sports, culture, and entertainment, the event is expected to leave a lasting impact on Senegal and the African continent.
