Amady DIOP, a 41-year-old real estate agent, was taken into custody on September 29 in Bambilor by the Brigade de recherches de Faidherbe. According to reports from Seneweb, he is facing charges of association of wrongdoers, attempted swindling, and possession of materials intended for counterfeiting legal currency. The investigation, led by the gendarmerie, has uncovered incriminating WhatsApp voice messages exchanged between DIOP and others.
The probe allegedly revealed discussions between Amady DIOP and a person named Baye A. regarding an operation involving counterfeit "black bills". DIOP reportedly learned about a proposal to sell fake bills and claimed to be waiting for Diégane FAYE, also known as "Saltigué", to obtain the necessary funds. Further investigation uncovered another voice message from FAYE to Baye A., transmitted by DIOP, mentioning a sample of bills handed to a supposed technician.
The technician allegedly confirmed the bills' authenticity before the rest of the product was to be delivered. The exchanged messages, according to investigators, suggest discussions on acquiring, transporting, and "laundering" the counterfeit bills, as well as sharing potential profits. These revelations have deepened the involvement of multiple individuals in the case.
When questioned by investigators, Amady DIOP denied any involvement in manufacturing, possessing, or selling counterfeit bills. He acknowledged knowing Diégane FAYE and introducing him to Baye A., but claimed not to have understood that the operation involved fake bills. DIOP stated he was aware of a transaction worth 10 billion CFA francs, for which he was to receive 10 million CFA francs.
DIOP claimed he believed the operation might be related to FAYE's mystical practices. Despite his claims, the investigation has led authorities to charge him in connection with the case. His arrest marks the fourth suspect apprehended in relation to the "Reug Reug" affair, which has garnered significant attention in Senegal.
On October 1, Amady DIOP was brought before the Dakar high court for further judicial proceedings. The case continues to unfold, with authorities working to unravel the extent of the counterfeit operation and the individuals involved. The suspects face serious charges, reflecting the severity of the alleged crimes.
The developments in this case highlight the ongoing efforts of Senegalese authorities to combat financial crimes and counterfeiting. As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge about the scope of the operation and the roles of those involved. The arrest of Amady DIOP is a significant step in the probe, which will likely continue to draw public interest.
