The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced on October 1, 2026, that Saudi Arabia has increased Nigeria's 2027 Hajj allocation to 60,000. This decision follows sustained diplomatic engagements between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Saudi authorities. The increase is an additional 10,000 slots, bringing the new total from 50,000 to 60,000.
According to NAHCON's Head of Information and Publications Division, Shafii Mohammed, 7,500 of the additional slots have been allocated to State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies, and Commissions. The remaining 2,500 slots were assigned to seven lead tour operator companies. This allocation aims to ensure a smooth and organized pilgrimage process.
NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and Saudi Arabia for securing the additional places. He assured that the commission would administer the slots transparently and in accordance with Nigerian and Saudi regulations. This move is expected to enhance Nigeria's participation in the 2027 Hajj.
The additional allocation represents an expansion of Nigeria's existing quota rather than a redistribution of the initial 50,000 places. As a result, NAHCON will need to adjust its operational timetable to accommodate the increased number of pilgrims. This may involve revising the processing of pilgrims' biometric information, which was required to be uploaded to the Nusuk-Masar platform by September 26.
The biometric data requirement is part of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's regulations. With the increased allocation, NAHCON will review and update its arrangements to ensure compliance with these regulations. The commission's efforts aim to provide a seamless experience for Nigerian pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for the 2027 Hajj.
The development is seen as a positive outcome of diplomatic efforts between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The increased allocation will provide more opportunities for Nigerian Muslims to participate in the Hajj. NAHCON's transparent administration of the slots is expected to ensure that the pilgrimage is conducted in a fair and orderly manner.
Key stakeholders, including the Federal Government and Saudi authorities, have been commended for their roles in securing the additional allocation. The successful implementation of the 2027 Hajj will depend on continued collaboration and coordination among these parties.
