On Friday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, attended a special Jumaat service at the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque in Alausa, Ikeja, to commemorate Nigeria's 66th National Independence Day. During his address, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of unity in achieving sustainable development and greater prosperity. He noted that Nigeria has the necessary human talent, capacity, and natural resources but stressed that unity is critical to unlocking the country's potential.
Sanwo-Olu cited the collective response to the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of what can be achieved when Nigerians work together. He recalled how the government, private organizations, religious bodies, and citizens came together to confront the crisis. The governor urged Nigerians to maintain this spirit of cooperation beyond periods of emergency and apply it to broader national development efforts. He also linked some of Nigeria's longstanding challenges to divisions among its citizens, citing the Civil War as a consequence of disunity.
The governor stressed that building a better Nigeria is a collective responsibility that should not rest solely with the government. He urged religious and traditional institutions, the private sector, and individual citizens to contribute to national development. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that if Nigerians unite around a common national purpose, they can achieve more and lift the country.
Chief Imam of the mosque, Yunuss Al-Imam, also spoke during the service, urging Nigerians to take an active role in developing their communities rather than leaving the responsibility entirely to the government. He called for an end to tribal sentiments and religious intolerance, stressing that no ethnic group is superior to another. The Imam emphasized the importance of peace, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence for societal progress and development.
Dr. Saaid Ahmad, Chairman of the Imams of the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, urged Nigerians to use the independence anniversary to reflect on the country's journey and express gratitude. He called on citizens to honestly assess how effectively available opportunities and resources have been utilized and accept individual and collective responsibility for the country's direction.
Ahmad also urged Nigerians to remain grateful to Almighty Allah for His protection and blessings while praying for wisdom, sound judgment, and divine guidance for the country's leaders. He emphasized that such guidance would help leaders discharge their responsibilities effectively and serve the people with dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose.
Sanwo-Olu's call for unity comes at a time when Nigeria is facing various challenges, including insecurity and economic difficulties. His message is seen as a reminder of the need for collective action and cooperation to overcome these challenges and build a stronger nation.
