Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund (LSSTF) for its efforts in revitalizing infrastructure and promoting grassroots sports development across the state. The governor praised the LSSTF board, chaired by Barrister Wahid Enitan Oshodi, for executing the state’s sports agenda. Sanwo-Olu highlighted sports as a core pillar of his administration’s THEMES+ agenda, emphasizing its role in engaging youths and discovering new talents.
The governor made these remarks at the official flag-off of sports equipment distribution to all 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). Represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, Sanwo-Olu expressed his satisfaction with the LSSTF’s performance, stating that the board has delivered and surpassed expectations. He noted that an idle youth is a danger to society, but a busy youth in sports is an asset.
LSSTF Chairman Wahid Oshodi outlined the Fund’s achievements, including the reconstruction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, a warm-up pool, and a 250-seater pavilion at the Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba. The Fund has also supplied equipment to 1,020 public primary schools via LASUBEB, 644 secondary schools across six Education Districts, and five tertiary institutions. Additionally, the Fund has sponsored disability sports and provided continuous training for coaches and athletes.
The distribution exercise represents a strategic step to foster social inclusion, talent discovery, and wealth creation at the community level. Oshodi stated that the Fund is committed to promoting sports development across the state, and the distribution of table tennis boards, basketball stands, balls, and nets to all 57 LGs and LCDAs marks the next phase of their grassroots revolution.
