Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) has acquired and deployed a high-capacity ambulift to improve its passenger handling services, particularly for passengers with reduced mobility. The ambulift is designed to provide safe and efficient embarkation and disembarkation assistance. This move makes SAHCO the only aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to own and operate the specialized equipment. The company's investment aims to enhance passenger safety and accessibility.

The ambulift features a hydraulic lifting system that raises the enclosed cabin to aircraft-door level, enabling safe transfers, especially at remote stands or where passenger boarding bridges are unavailable. This equipment complements SAHCO's earlier investment in Evac-Chairs, which facilitates the safe embarkation and disembarkation of passengers with reduced mobility on steps. These investments demonstrate SAHCO's commitment to improving passenger handling services, particularly for those requiring additional assistance.

British Airways, a premium customer of SAHCO, provided valuable guidance throughout the process, ensuring that the ambulift's deployment, procedures, and operational standards align with global best practices and international airlines' expectations. The acquisition and deployment of the ambulift involved collaboration with Expavia Aviation Consultants, a UK-based aviation consultancy, and Ergon Training Centre, a European GSE specialist.

SAHCO's Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, emphasized that owning and operating the ambulift enables the company to respond directly to the needs of passengers with reduced mobility, providing dignified and efficient services. He expressed confidence that the equipment will give passengers and their families assurance that they will be handled with care.

SAHCO's Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, highlighted that the investment reflects the company's people-first approach to service delivery and its commitment to international best practices. The ambulift is a significant addition to SAHCO's operations, demonstrating its commitment to providing safe, dignified, and professional services to every passenger, particularly those requiring additional assistance.

Prior to deployment, SAHCO's designated ambulift operators underwent a training program, achieving certification in accordance with IATA AHM 1110 RMP 14m standards. The training program was delivered by Ergon Training Centre, which also provided technical inspections and functional checks at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The ambulift complements SAHCO's comprehensive aviation support services, including Passenger Handling, Baggage Handling, Ramp Handling, Cargo Handling, Aviation Security Services, and Premium Lounge Services. With this acquisition, SAHCO reinforces its focus on ensuring that its equipment is modern, fit for purpose, and operated and maintained in line with required safety and operational standards.
