The government of Rwanda has suspended two top officials in Muhanga district amid allegations of assaulting and extorting a local resident. The suspended officials are the Secretary General of Mbiriri Sector, Gitifu, and the Sector Development Officer, SEDO. According to reports, the two officials were accused of demanding 50,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $55 USD) from a local resident, who was operating a bar, and assaulting him when he failed to pay.

The incident occurred on September 28, 2026, when the two officials allegedly stormed into the resident's home, demanding the payment. When the resident failed to produce the money, they allegedly assaulted him, causing injuries. The victim reportedly sought medical attention and later reported the incident to the authorities. The government has since launched an investigation into the matter.

According to eyewitnesses, the two officials had been harassing the resident for some time, demanding money and other favors. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that the officials had been threatening him and his family. The government has promised to take action against the officials if the allegations are found to be true.

The District Administrator of Nyarusange, Byicaza Jean Claude, confirmed the suspension of the two officials, stating that they would be investigated for their alleged misconduct.
