The Rwandan government has announced plans to increase the number of experts in protecting against cyber attacks that use artificial intelligence (AI). This move comes as AI is increasingly being used to steal personal and business data. The announcement was made during the ISACA Rwanda Chapter Annual Conference 2026, which brought together professionals in IT auditing, cybersecurity, and data protection.
According to Pascaline Umuhire, Deputy Director of ISACA Rwanda Chapter, the organization offers various training programs and certifications for IT and cybersecurity professionals. However, she noted that the number of certified professionals in Rwanda is still low. The establishment of an ISACA chapter in Rwanda aims to make these training programs and certifications more accessible to professionals and enthusiasts.
Rukundo Maharaliel, a certified IT auditor and ISACA member, stated that AI-powered tools are being used to steal sensitive data from individuals and businesses. He emphasized the need for cybersecurity professionals to acquire knowledge about AI-powered attacks and defense strategies. Maharaliel noted that AI-powered tools can be used for both attacking and defending against cyber threats.
Erasto Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Innovation (MINICT), revealed that the government is working to increase the number of experts in IT security. He announced the establishment of the Rwanda Institute of Computing, which will provide training and certifications in IT security and AI.
The Rwanda Institute of Computing will start operating in the upcoming academic year and will offer programs for students who have completed their studies at the Rwanda Coding Academy. The institute aims to provide professionals with the necessary skills to protect against cyber threats. Rurangwa emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in protecting sensitive data.
The ISACA Rwanda Chapter Annual Conference 2026 aimed to raise awareness about the importance of IT security and cybersecurity in Rwanda. The conference brought together professionals and experts in the field to discuss the latest trends and threats in cybersecurity. The event provided a platform for networking and knowledge sharing among professionals.
The government and ISACA Rwanda Chapter are working together to address the shortage of cybersecurity experts in Rwanda. The partnership aims to provide training and certification programs that will equip professionals with the necessary skills to protect against cyber threats.
